Teaser, poster and premiere date
The first teaser trailer and poster for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord arrived today, offering the first look at Maul’s next chapter. Disney+ will launch the series with a two-episode premiere on April 6, 2026, followed by two episodes each week across five weeks, concluding on Star Wars Day, May 4.
A serialized, fast-paced return for Maul
The show is tightly serialized and described by producers as a roller-coaster–fast series that leans into pulpy, crime-driven storytelling. Set a few years after Order 66, Maul is no longer purely the Sith figure of old — he’s scheming to rebuild a criminal syndicate on Janix, a city-planet untouched by the Empire. The story introduces a disillusioned Jedi Padawan who may become a pivotal ally or pawn in Maul’s pursuit of revenge.
Janix: a new Star Wars underworld
Executive producers call Janix “one part Gotham, one part Metropolis and a hundred percent Star Wars.” Built into a crater with layered cityscapes, Janix is governed by its own functioning democracy and law enforcement, making it fertile ground for organized crime and fragile peace between syndicates. The series will also show the Empire’s slow consolidation of power and feature members of the Inquisitorius, including the Inquisitor Marrok.
Cast and creative team
Sam Witwer returns to voice Maul, a role he’s played across The Clone Wars and Rebels. Gideon Adlon stars as Devon Izara, a conflicted young Padawan. Wagner Moura (recent Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee) voices Brander Lawson, and Richard Ayoade plays Two-Boots. Other cast members include Dennis Haysbert, Chris Diamantopoulos, Vanessa Marshall, Steve Blum and more.
Created by Dave Filoni and developed with Matt Michnovetz, the series is executive-produced by Filoni, Athena Portillo, Matt Michnovetz, Brad Rau, Carrie Beck and Josh Rimes. Brad Rau serves as supervising director.
Visual style and production notes
The animation blends stylized CG with old-school practical touches. Producers highlight a painterly approach—painting brushstrokes on glass and using matte paintings on canvas—captured on camera and layered into shots to create rich, tactile visuals. Animation director Keith Kellogg worked with CGCG and Lucasfilm’s teams to upgrade body mechanics and facial performance for more fluid character animation.
A surprising quieter moment in the teaser shows Maul performing a tea ceremony, revealing new facets to his character and hinting at deeper interpersonal dynamics, especially with Devon Izara.
What to watch for
Expect a tense mix of underworld politics, lightsaber drama, and the emerging threat of the Empire’s Inquisitors. Fans will get ten episodes of serialized storytelling that promises character depth, action, and a darker corner of the Star Wars galaxy.
