Along with the ring, Watkins gave Johnson a carved piece of wood bearing the words, “Honestly, who are we to fight the alchemy?” — a line from Taylor Swift’s song “The Alchemy.” Watkins told reporters he had planned the moment for a year and that it “went above and beyond our wildest imagination.” Johnson said she’d once hoped for an Olympic engagement and that the reality was even better than she’d imagined.
