CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Authorities say James Bailey, 40, the husband of model and retired actress Devon Aoki, struck a man on a stand-up scooter in a Coral Gables crosswalk Monday evening. The collision occurred just after 5:15 p.m. at Douglas Road and Giralda Avenue, according to the Coral Gables Police Department.
Police say the scooter rider suffered serious injuries, including two fractures to his foot. Witnesses told officers the victim’s left foot became trapped under the right tire of the Audi SQ7 involved in the crash.

The victim’s girlfriend told police she was “frantically asking” the driver to move the vehicle back to free the man’s foot. Investigators say Bailey did move the SUV but continued driving without rendering aid, exchanging information, or reporting the collision.
Surveillance cameras and automated license plate readers captured images of the Audi, and officers traced the vehicle to the registered address shared by Bailey and Aoki in Pinecrest.

Officers, with help from Pinecrest police, went to the couple’s multi-million-dollar residence. The report says Devon Aoki told officers she did not know the whereabouts of the SUV. As police were leaving, Bailey reportedly returned in the Audi and pulled into the driveway.
A Coral Gables sergeant activated emergency lights and called for Bailey to stop. Police say Bailey ran from the sergeant and entered the home, then locked the front door. After several minutes of observation, officers say Bailey walked out and was taken into custody. The Audi showed minor damage consistent with striking a pedestrian on a scooter.
