Elton John turns kneecap into bespoke jewellery

Elton John has shared how a piece of his body became a personal fashion statement. After having both knees replaced in 2024, the 78-year-old asked his surgeon to keep his kneecaps. He then commissioned jeweller Theo Fennell to transform the bone into a unique necklace.

The making of a controversial keepsake

Fennell described the unusual process: the removed patellae were dried out, treated to reduce porosity, coated with acetate and carefully polished. The finished result is a gold-framed pendant containing Elton’s right kneecap and a matching chain featuring bone links.

“I honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries,” Elton said, praising Fennell’s craftsmanship. He compared the worn bone’s appearance to an ancient artefact and called the necklace a statement piece.

Inscription and symbolism

On the reverse of the pendant is a Latin phrase translating to “I will no longer bow to any man.” The jeweller joked that the sentiment was fitting, given Elton’s missing kneecap.

The piece was first shown as part of a short documentary in which Elton discussed gold’s role in his life on and off stage. He has since worn the necklace at public events, adding a highly personal accessory to his famously flamboyant wardrobe.

Context: health, surgeries and resilience

The knee operations are among several major procedures Elton has undergone. He has previously had his appendix, tonsils and adenoids removed, and in 2017 he underwent prostate surgery after a cancer diagnosis. In his autobiography he revealed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening infection following that operation.
