Celebrity breakfast draws local attention
Jennifer Garner, the Oscar- and Golden Globe-recognized actor, quietly visited Ricky’s All Day Grill in Yellowknife’s Centre Square Mall on Saturday. Satwant Dhillon, co-owner of the Ricky’s location, told Cabin Radio Garner spent about three hours at the restaurant, chatting with staff and other customers.
“She was sitting here for like, three hours,” Dhillon said. He added Garner was polite and upbeat, telling him she loved Yellowknife and that it was “awesome.” The restaurant posted a photo of staff with Garner on Facebook, writing: “See why even the stars choose Ricky’s.” (Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=122155865714696157&set=a.122099275610696157)
Photos, selfies and social buzz
By mid-morning other diners realized a celebrity was in the diner when customers began taking pictures. Trevor Bower, a Yellowknife resident eating at Ricky’s, said he snapped a photo with Garner and briefly spoke with her partner John Miller and Garner’s mother.
“They were just up here for a couple days to visit Yellowknife because they have heard so much about it and they really wanted to see the northern lights,” Bower said.
Some locals initially questioned whether the woman in the photos was actually Garner, but followers pointed out the glasses in the restaurant photo matched those Garner has worn publicly. Ricky’s Facebook post and other resident selfies circulated across social media, giving the new restaurant a timely marketing boost.
Reason for visit appears personal
Cabin Radio reporters noted Garner has new projects in development, but there was nothing publicly tying those to a visit to the Northwest Territories. Dhillon said Garner did not specify an exact reason beyond visiting. Local accounts suggest the trip was personal — an opportunity to see the northern lights and to experience Yellowknife.
Local reaction and community moment
For the team at Ricky’s, which opened in Centre Square Mall last year, the visit was a welcome highlight. Staff posed for photos with Garner and shared the moment on the restaurant’s social channels. Customers praised Garner’s friendliness and politeness.
Whether drawn by the aurora, the landscape or a private visit, Garner’s stop at Ricky’s turned into a community moment — a small-town celebrity sighting that generated smiles, photos and a short-lived social media flurry for Yellowknife’s newest Ricky’s location.
