Mbappé calls for united criticism from Madrid fans
Kylian Mbappé urged Real Madrid supporters on Monday to aim their frustration at the team as a whole rather than singling out players, after Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham were whistled by the Bernabéu crowd.
“If they whistle, they should whistle the whole squad,” Mbappé told reporters ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League tie with AS Monaco. “They shouldn’t single out one player. It’s the fault of the whole team … Madrid fans aren’t against us, they’re angry, that’s normal.”
His comments came after Madrid scraped a 2-0 LaLiga win over Levante in a match where supporters expressed displeasure following a difficult week for the club.
What sparked the Bernabéu reaction
Fans had reacted angrily after Real Madrid lost the Supercopa final and were eliminated from the Copa del Rey. Those results, combined with dressing-room turbulence and the departure of coach Xabi Alonso — replaced temporarily by Álvaro Arbeloa — fuelled the unrest.
During the Levante match, the loudest whistles were reserved for Vinícius and Bellingham, and some sections of the crowd even chanted for president Florentino Pérez to resign.
“It isn’t Vini’s fault if we aren’t playing well,” Mbappé said, defending his teammate. “Vini like you or anyone, he’s human. I have a lot of affection for him. We as a team have to protect him better. I have to protect him better, so he isn’t alone. He has to know he’ll never be alone at Real Madrid.”
Backing Vinícius and addressing coach rumours
Vinícius has endured a testing season marked by dips in form, speculation over his future and a public row with former coach Xabi Alonso after being substituted in the Clásico.
Mbappé also addressed questions about unrest in the dressing room and Alonso’s exit. He refused to accept the narrative that Alonso failed at Real Madrid, saying: “Saying Xabi didn’t succeed at Real Madrid isn’t true. He left before everything was decided. We lost the Supercopa, and we lost in the Copa after Xabi [left]. I think Xabi is going to be a great coach … What happened, happened. It’s a decision of the club, we have to respect it.”
He added that much of the speculation circulating is inaccurate and urged the team to respond on the pitch: “There are a lot of things that are said that aren’t true, and there are things that are 10% true and 90% false. Our job is to keep quiet and do things on the pitch.”
What’s next for Madrid
Real Madrid now turn their focus to the Champions League, where they face AS Monaco. The club will hope a collective response stabilises the mood at the Bernabéu and protects key players as the season progresses.
