Round one at the Biltmore
Fresh off leading his high school team to a state title, Charlie Woods opened play at the 62nd Junior Orange Bowl International at the historic Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables with a 73 (1 over).
The 73 left Charlie tied for 21st in a field that included 48 boys and 36 girls. In the gallery were his parents — father Tiger Woods and mother Elin Nordegren — watching the 15-year-old compete at the tournament his father won in 1991.
Key moments from Day 1
One play stood out on the 11th hole. Charlie’s ball landed under a tree and when he swung to escape, it struck a root and popped almost straight up — nearly hitting him. After the scare, he recovered to reach the green and sank a long putt for par, prompting cheers from the crowd.
“Hell of a shot,” Tiger told his son afterward, as the two shared a light moment about the sequence.
Charlie arrives at the Biltmore ranked No. 13 in the American Junior Golf Association and fresh off first-team All-America honors. His breakout season included an AJGA victory and a dominant high school campaign for The Benjamin School.
Why this event matters
There’s family history at the Junior Orange Bowl: Tiger won the boys’ title in 1991 and nearly added another. This year is Charlie’s first appearance at the event, where he’ll test himself against an international junior field and other rising stars such as Cameron Kuchar, son of PGA Tour pro Matt Kuchar.
Charlie will play four days of stroke play, with the final results determined after Tuesday’s final round on Jan. 6.
