ABC to re-air true-crime special on North Dakota killing
ABC confirmed it will re-broadcast the two-hour 20/20 documentary “The Last Strike,” which examines the 2020 killing of Chad Entzel and the subsequent investigation into a North Dakota love triangle. The special originally aired in March 2023 and features exclusive interviews and investigative material.
What the documentary shows
The program includes a rare jailhouse interview with Nikki Entzel, who was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in 2023, and police interrogation tapes of Earl Howard. ABC’s synopsis says the episode presents security camera footage, investigator interviews and recordings from the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations that trace events leading up to the crime.
When and where to watch
The documentary will re-air Friday from 8 to 10 p.m. ET on ABC. Beginning Saturday, it will be available to stream on ABC News digital platforms and on Disney+ and Hulu.
Case background and outcomes
Emergency responders discovered a fire at the Entzel home northeast of Bismarck on Jan. 2, 2020. Inside, they found Chad Entzel’s badly burned body in a bedroom. Investigators later determined he had been shot twice with a shotgun, including a fatal head wound.
Prosecutors say Nikki Entzel and Earl Howard were involved in a love triangle and plotted to benefit financially from Chad Entzel’s death. Authorities allege two fires were set to destroy evidence. An initial murder charge against Howard was dropped because prosecutors could not prove who fired the fatal shot; he later pleaded guilty in October 2021 to arson and conspiracy charges and received a sentence that makes him eligible for parole after at least 21 years.
Nikki Entzel was convicted by a jury in 2022 and sentenced to life in prison. She appealed her conviction, but the North Dakota Supreme Court denied relief in October 2023.
Why the re-airing matters
The 20/20 special compiles courtroom footage, investigative interviews and surveillance that may not have been widely seen by national audiences. For local communities and viewers interested in true crime, the rebroadcast offers a comprehensive look at the evidence, the investigation and the lives affected by the case.
Viewer note
The episode contains graphic descriptions of violence and details of an ongoing criminal matter; viewer discretion is advised.
